Editing a Region step by step #
You can change a saved Region's name, description and boundary. There is no need to redraw it from scratch: move, add or remove vertices of the existing outline.
1. Open the saved Region for editing #
- Open Regions.
- If the Region is active, look on the right side of the page header for Active Region. Beside its name are Show records and Edit. Click Edit. “Show records” opens filtered results, not the boundary editor.
- The full toolbar appears below the map, including the pencil, minus and arrows. Seeing the outline does not yet mean its points can be dragged.
- Check the name in the Edit Region form and the outline on the map. On a desktop the form is beside the map; on a narrow screen you may need to scroll to it.
The Edit action is available to owners and users with the editor role. Viewing or activating a Region does not grant permission to change it.
Alternative route: for a Region that is not active, scroll to the Region Library below the map and click Edit in its row. You do not need to activate it first. “Activate” enables the record filter, not editing.
2. Enable editing of the existing boundary #
- Zoom in on the boundary section you want to change.
- Click the pencil, labelled Edit vertices, on the map toolbar. Hover over an icon to see its description.
- Vertex handles appear along the outline, with smaller handles between them.
The pencil edits the existing polygon. The plus starts a new boundary; it does not enable editing of the current one.
3. Adjust the outline #
- Move a point: drag a vertex handle to its new position. The adjacent boundary segments move with it.
- Add a point: click the smaller handle halfway along a segment. This creates a new vertex that you can then drag.
- Remove a point: click a vertex, then click minus. This removes the selected point, not the whole Region. An outline must retain at least three vertices.
- Undo or redo: use the Undo change and Redo change arrows. They apply to the current geometry editing session, not to restoring older saved versions.
You can also edit the parts of a multipart Region and hole boundaries. Avoid crossing segments and keep each hole within its enclosing outline.
4. Confirm the boundary and save the Region #
- Click the check mark (✓), Confirm boundary. The editing handles disappear.
- Review the result. Click the pencil again if further adjustments are needed.
- You can also change the name and description in the form.
- Click Save changes in the Edit Region form.
- Check the save confirmation. A geometry change creates a new boundary version.
The check mark alone does not save the Region to the Library. It only finishes map editing. Use “Save changes” to persist your work. Do not leave the page before saving.
Choose Cancel to discard unsaved changes. The Library save and Google Drive copy are separate outcomes: a failed Drive copy does not mean that the Library save was undone.
Toolbar below the map: left to right #
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| 1. Plus (+) | Starts a new boundary instead of adjusting the existing one. It does not add a single point to the current outline |
| 2. Cross (×) | Clears the entire boundary from the current form; it does not delete the saved Region from the Library |
| 3. Pencil | Enables editing handles. Choose this control to move points of the existing Region |
| 4. Minus (−) | Removes the selected vertex. First enable the pencil and click a point |
| 5. Left arrow (↶) | Undo a geometry change in the current editing session |
| 6. Right arrow (↷) | Redo an undone geometry change |
| 7. Check mark (✓) | Confirms the working outline: finishes vertex editing or closes a newly drawn polygon. Then click “Save changes” in the form |
Pale controls are inactive when their action is not yet available: for example, minus before selecting a point, or undo before the first change.
Limits #
On-map vertex editing is limited to boundaries with up to 1000 vertices. For a highly detailed boundary, the application displays a message. You can edit it in an external GIS tool and upload it as a New boundary file, or draw a replacement boundary. Uploading a file replaces the boundary rather than adding to it; you must still click Save changes.
To combine several saved boundaries without replacing the sources, use Combining Regions.
