Map and GPS / Locality

Record locality #

Locality is the description of where a record was made, saved with one record. It corresponds to iNaturalist place_guess, and the nearest Darwin Core field is dwc:locality.

How locality differs from a site #

Locality is text attached to a record. A site is an object that groups records by GPS and radius. Changing the locality does not change other records and does not create a relation.

Reverse geocoding #

ENTOMONE can read a locality from the map through OpenStreetMap (OSM). The result is a suggestion; you can type or correct the locality name manually.

How to fill in a locality #

While editing one record #

  1. Open a record and choose Edit.
  2. In the Locality field, enter a name manually or choose Read from map.
  3. Review the proposed name and edit it if necessary.
  4. Save the record.

Automatic lookup requires valid GPS coordinates on the record.

During Multi Upload #

  1. Add photos on the Upload page.
  2. Wait for photo metadata, including GPS coordinates, to be read. ENTOMONE automatically looks up the locality name for every photo with GPS.
  3. Review or edit the localities assigned to each photo group.
  4. Submit the records.

The automation fills only empty localities. Names entered earlier remain unchanged, and missing GPS or a service error does not prevent manual entry or saving.

In bulk for saved records #

  1. Open My records, New search results or Recent records.
  2. Select the records.
  3. Choose Actions, then Read localities from map.
  4. Start the lookup and wait for the summary.

The same function is available on a site page for its records with an empty Locality field. Existing names are not overwritten. Records without GPS are skipped and included in the summary.

Site-name suggestion #

If records are already assigned to a site but have an empty or different Locality, the site page shows Suggest the site name. ENTOMONE displays the current and suggested names separately and lets you select the records to change.

Nothing changes until you confirm. The operation replaces only Locality with the site name. It does not change GPS, the assigned site, the visit, or the country. It does not use reverse geocoding - the site is the source of the new name.

iNaturalist #

When publishing to iNaturalist, the locality can be sent as place_guess. GPS and radius are compatible with iNaturalist.
