Finding Regions in OpenStreetMap #
OpenStreetMap, abbreviated as OSM, is a public map maintained by a community. ENTOMONE can retrieve a ready-made boundary for a country, administrative area, park, reserve, island or geographic region. You do not need to know OSM tools or write special commands.
How to find a Region #
- Open Regions and select OpenStreetMap.
- Enter a name, for example Roztocze, and click Search.
- Compare the results. The same name may identify an administrative area, park,
- Click Preview for the selected result. ENTOMONE downloads the boundary
- Inspect the map, then click Load boundary.
- Name and save the Region. Preview alone saves nothing.
town or geographic region, each with a different boundary.
and displays it on the map.
How to assess a result #
- Check whether the boundary covers the intended land, islands and coastline.
- Enter a more specific name when many results are returned.
- If there are no results, try the full name, a local-language name or another

outdated or represent a different type of area than expected.
regionalisation, such as a specific edition of Kondracki's classification.
If ENTOMONE reports that a boundary cannot be loaded, select another result. You can also draw your own Region or import a prepared boundary file.
After saving, ENTOMONE keeps its own copy of the boundary. Later changes in OSM do not automatically alter the saved Region. Loading a boundary also changes neither OpenStreetMap data nor any other Region owned by the user.
What happens in the background? #
ENTOMONE uses two methods to search OpenStreetMap. The standard search service is called Nominatim. When additional boundaries are needed, such as geographic regions, the application also uses Overpass. Overpass searches the detailed data stored in OSM. This happens automatically after you click Search; you do not need to use either service separately.
